Unit 5 Vertigo

1. The use of music in Vertigo is very particular. It is used not only to guide the spectator's emotions but also to provide identity cues and clues. Identify two moments where the music plays a crucial role and explain them.
-Music did play a big part in the making of the film. Imagine the film without it's sound, could've never been a such great movie. Not only that the music is being used to guide the spectator's emotions and to also provide identity cues and clues but to also set a feeling to the audience.
Two moments that a music played a crucial role are 1. After she woke up and realized that she was at someone else's house, he went to get the phone, while he was on the phone he heard some thing but they never showed her leaving but the sound that was used when he went to check on her set a strong feeling to the audience that she was not around anymore , that she had left.
2. The second part where music played a crucial role is when they went to the church that she had been dreaming about, she asked him to let her go in it alone and when he did let her go, by looking at the top of the church he learned that she was going to commit a suicide. The music that was used at this part really brings out the clues to the audience that something is going to happen which ended up happening.

2. Evaluate the movement of Vertigo in comparison to other films on the Sight and Sound Polls and comment on its deserve/undeserved place as the best film of all time. Comparing the movement of the film to other films of its time, I would say that it had some really good camera movements, clean, stable and cinematic style which helped some of the scenes of the film come to live comparing to other films that doesn't haven enough moving shots.

Detour.

  • Film Noir alters the perception of characters. Do you think the protagonist is a  hero or an anti-hero? Is there something in the cinematography of the movie that suggest this?

-I think the protagonist is a anti-hero. Most of the actions that accure in the movie, he was never aware of them. I am not sure what category he falls into. I chose anti-hero because at the end he got caught by the police , maybe he could've been a hero if the police never found him at the end.

There was't enough of information in the cinematography that suggested if the protagonist was a hero nor anti-hero. Which is somehow interesting thinking of those days days when making movies was very new. It makes me wonder if the writers were very sure what they were doing if they were just learning. If they were aware of the audience's take on the product.

1.-"Freaks has been considered a melodrama but also a horror film, pick one and write an argument defending your choice."
Freaks it's a horror film
I mostly describe a horror film as a film that involve elements that are beyond normal, such as super natural. Freaks does have those elements, we all know that the actors were real that there wasn't any special effects involved, but the setting of the film real change the whole view of a person. Comparing to what we see in real life, we don't see as many disable people gathering around or disable people turning on people for mistreating them.

The car crush scene it the most horrify scene of them all. The way the freaks were going after the people, they are crawling through the mud, snarling and bearing weapons preparing to exact their revenge, the look on their faces can really scare a person to death and the music behind it. Comparing to aliens there is no different to it and if you find aliens movies scare why not freaks? They both adapt the same type of elements.

2.-Some critics consider the film as an argument in defense of equality while others believe the movie is a demonization of difference. Select one of the points of views and defend it.
Defense of equality
Thinking of our everyday life, it is true that the film could've been an argument in defense of equality.
When you are disable you are always mistreated, whether is in a good way or bad way the mistreatment will always be there. As in freaks the freaks were very nice people but because of those part parts of bodies they are missing they were directly treated wrong, different resulting violence. They were defending themselves.
